The president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari yesterday said “ No matter what opinion you have about Abacha, I agreed to work with him and the PTF road we did from here to Port Harcourt, to Onitsha, to Benin and so on… On top of other things in the institution, education, medical care and so on” and I say the devil deserves some accolades too. If a tyrant could be celebrated why not the devil? When a leader gag his people, why shouldn’t the devil be celebrated?
In the history of Nigeria’s military rule, Abacha is dubbed as the most tyrannical. Staunchly suppressed opposition, NADECO leaders were assassinated, those that escape assassination were battered in prison. Opinion leaders ran out of the country to avoid persecution. Oil blocs were distributed to loyalists. Nigeria is still recovering over $320 million he looted to Switzerland. Well, how can our opinion counts since it has never been the centerpiece of the decision making. None of our past leaders is a saint but we failed to bring them to book.
President Buhari taunted Obasanjo administration for spending over $15 billion dollars on power sector with little or nothing to show for it. In his words, the president said “One of the former Heads of State between that times was bragging that he spent more than 15 billion American dollars on power. Where is the power? And now we have to pay the debt”.
My question is why pay for the service you didn’t enjoy? Why not make them accountable? Without bringing them to book, not extending the corruption fight to past leaders will only make your allegation a mere political talk. If we continue to celebrate those that had inputs in the quagmire we are today, then THE DEVIL DESERVES SOME ACCOLADES TOO.
May God bless Nigeria.
