THEME: HIDDEN TREASURES
Title: Tame of Africa’s Riches
Treasure is not treasure
When it is aided by every eye
There were treasures in fathers
Folded in holds of jesus ships
Across the Mediterranean sea
But no treasures in the muscles
Of brothers who wade through the sea
Treasures in the strength that withstood every shackle
Treasure in the skull of Baquaqua
Who fought slavery with a pen
Treasure in Nkrumah, Mandela and they
Who sought light
To illuminate corners of Africa.
The scavengers had picked
The treasures that adorn Africa then;
Treasures are still
Buried in the belly of Africa
For the vultures searching swoops.
Let the treasures in our skulls
Shame the scavengers away.
TITLE; HIDDEN TREASURES
Between the chest of this mount’
Treasures lie flat
Hidden before the eyes of men.
Only the eyes of the dreamers see
And the hands of the resilient
Bring them forth
From hardened wombs.
He who searches
For the lustrous tanzanite
Must endure the cold wind
Of the Kilimanjaro.
Do not murmur
At the harshness of life,
The rage of whirlwind
The burns of the sun…
He who must eat the honey from a mountain
Will not worry about the edge of an axe.
Even the graveyard houses treasures;
Those wasted in life’s combat
Drowned in the tempest
On life’s sea.
Do not run with treasures unearthed
To the silence of the grave
Bring them forth
Before bouquets are left to dry
On cracked graveyards.
