THE GHOST’S BRIEFING
“MURDER! 19-YEAR-OLD GIRL AND 23-YEAR-OLD MAN STABBED TO DEATH!” local newspapers read a month ago.
It sent people into frenzy and they’ve had lots of things to say. They’ve asked what the police have been doing concerning the case, but they have no idea that the police have been trying their best but are no closer to solving the case since their sources say there were no witnesses. But that’s a lie! God, a dirty panty and a calabash were witnesses.
They still don’t have the dead girl’s real name, even the dead man remains unidentified. Truth is, they’ll get no further in the investigation since they’re forcefully turning a blind eye to the real witnesses.
Theories have been formulated to explain the gruesome death, but even the police themselves find the theories laughable. Surely, no one will believe such.
They’re about giving up, but I wish they could just see the evidences. I wish they would pry open their eyes and see the used panty and calabash lying under the chair at the crime scene.
But no! They only remember that two lovers are dead!
If only they could see these things, they’d connect the dots faster. They would know that the man was a typical yahoo boy with a girlfriend who had fallen prey to either his charms or his money until she discovered the truth. That he used one of her panties for his diabolical deed, but unfortunately was found out, and things went awry when he tried to silence her.
In an attempt to save herself, she had resorted to violence, and somehow, in an unexplainably cruel and weird twist of fate, they had silenced each other. By stabbing.
I know all this because I was once that girl. But now, I am a dead body rotting in my grave.
In a month’s time, the police will still have no lead and they’ll arrest any suspect. Then, the newspapers will read “MURDERER OF 19-YEAR-OLD GIRL AND 23-YEAR-OLD MAN APPREHENDED.”
And the people will think they have peace again.
Officer: Did you love your wife?
Officer:So you killed her
Man: I wish I did
Officer: Why do you say so?
Man: She was having an affair with another man
Officer: Why do you care? You were never around
Man:She was my wife
Officer: But you said you didn’t love her
Man: She was my wife. Wives belong with their husbands.
Officer: If you didn’t kill her then who did?
Man: Her lover
Officer: Excuse me?
Man: Her lover killed her
Officer: Your wife was found dead in her room and you were the only one present
Man: I wasn’t
Man: She had an argument with her lover over the phone that morning. I heard her. Yelling from my study. By 1pm, he paid her a visit and that was when I heard the gun shot.
Officer: Did your wife or her lover know that you were around?
Man: No. When I’m not abroad, I spend a lot of time in my study. She forgets I’m home
Officer: How did the lover get in?
Man: He has a key. My wife gave him.
Officer: Did you get a look at this man?
Officer: The neighbors heard the gunshots at 1.30pm but you didn’t call the ambulance till 4pm. Did you intentionally wait for her to bleed out?
Man: She deserved to die
2 hours later, the sketch artist was done taking the old man’s description of the lover and presented the sketch to the officer. The officer opened it immediately and stared at the picture in front of him. He would recognize that face anyway; the squinty eyes, broad nose and thin lips. His own face. The bastard had really seen him. He crumpled the sketch and dumped it in the bin. Walking to the investigation room, he opened the door and poked his head inside
Officer:You’re free to go
Viper had urinated on the cell floor, right next to Joseph. It was hard for Joseph not to cringe as the pungent stench filled his nostrils and soaked into his weathered rags. He knew better than to complain.
He wished he had not been so rude to his warder last week. He would have been spending his last night in prison in his old cell if he wasn’t so stupid. More so, pride was keeping him from begging the cell warder to return him to his old cell.
In the ‘seven hells’ as Viper’s cell was called, he had received more beatings than he ever did in his entire twenty years of living. He even suffered gravely for being a politician’s son. Joseph was surprised he lasted more than a week in seven hells. His first day had been horrific.
He had vomited out of utter disgust at the cell and was made to pack his own vomit. The walls of the cell were black and slimy. The floor was an ugly muddy brown with patches of blood and a little mound of human excrement at the far corner of it. Everyday in seven hells for him was worse than the last. And he severely paid for each of his crimes. Being a politician’s son, being a ‘pretty boy’ and raping a girl. But he would endure another round of torture for the night.
It was going to be his last night in Seven Hells.
Senator Kadi signalled to his bodyguard to open the briefcase he placed on the Judge Danladi’s table. His beautiful wife gave the Judge a knowing look.
“I want the case thrown out and my son out of bars. I hope the contents in the briefcase eases your inconveniences” Senator Kadi said and the Judge’s face hardened at the sight of the fat wads of American dollars.
He shook his head wearily. “Your son is guilty. I cannot help him. Please take your money and leave before I call the Police”
Mrs Kadi glanced at her husband who only gave the Judge a sly smile and snapped his fingers at his bodyguard. The bodyguard played a video for the Judge.
His face was instantly transformed to one of horror and pain. The video had been of his wife and children tied, gagged, tortured and bruised. How the Senator had gotten a hold of his family, he certainly couldn’t imagine how.
The senator rose to his feet. “I hope that convinces you. They will all be dead tomorrow if my son is not set free. Have a wonderful night” Senator Kadi said as he stormed out with his wife next to him.
