I Am Nigeria – Poem By Sanusi Emmanuel

I Am Nigeria – Poem By Sanusi Emmanuel

Say I am Nigeria.
Say I am Vanity.
Say Nigeria is Vanity.

Say I am Nigeria.
That my body is a tree where ripe fruits of corruption can be plucked;
That my body is a template of hypocrisy –
Where we fuse our real thoughts into silence
While allowing our lips break into sounds of deceit;
That my body is a war front of religion –
Where fight for religion’s supremacy is Paramount.

Say Nigeria is I.
That my sweat is blood
& my spittle is curved into the curvature of pain;
That my body dances “shaku shaku” to voices that shakes “who” into ditches of guilt & zones of Golgotha –
Say “who” is our saviour, warrior… Our truth.

Say Nigeria is I.
That I live to die untimely,
But I die only to live as tales of dirges & warnings to “corrupto-sexuals” like me.
Say I am Nigeria.
Say I am Vanity.
Say Nigeria is Vanity.
