How Do We Tell These Tales? – Poem By Sanusi Emmanuel

How do we tell these tales to our children?
Tales our father forgot to tell,
Thereby leaving us to the mercies
Of books written by souls synonymous to eavesdroppers.

How do we tell to our children,
Tales of how the moon becomes a magnet at night,
With our Fathers anchoring the ship leading us
Into the world of short stories and fables?

How do we tell to our children,
Tales of how the kitchen belonged to the woman,
With fathers taking the lead roles in all movies
Staged on farmlands?

How do we tell to our children,
Tales of the prankster ijapa, and his ever supporting wife;
Tales of his 7 sons,
And his counterpart – dog?

How do we tell to our children,
Tales of the various masquerades taking turns at the village square
To wow the villagers;
Tales of the various wars conquered by the gods of our land,
Gods our offspring now tag barbaric?

How do we tell these tales to our children?
Tales long lost within the bellies of our own fathers.

Tell me how do we tell these tales,
When we ourselves are blind men
Led into light with the walking sticks these eavesdroppers provided for us.

I Am Emmanuel.
